The FBI executed a search warrant Monday at Donald Trump‘s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, as part of an investigation into the handling of presidential documents, including classified documents, that may have been brought there, three people familiar with the situation told CNN.
- They have reason to believe a crime has been committed.
- They have proof that elements of that crime are at a specific place.
- There is no other way they can obtain this material.
So — the fact that they got a search warrant means:
- The Dept of Justice has a lot of evidence showing the Trump committed a crime.
- They know that evidence of that crime is at Trump’s Florida home.
- The only way they can get these materials is by searching the home.
We know that the object of the raid was at least 15 boxes of highly classified material that Trump removed from the White House, thereby violating a number of laws.
The Washington Post reports that some of these documents are so highly classified that they cannot even list the titles of the documents in an unclassified document.
This also means that a federal grand jury has been meeting in DC to consider charges against Trump for mishandling of classified material.
