Harry Enten argues that Mike Johnson is well within the mainstream of the contemporary Republican party on issues like did Joe Biden win the 2020 election (no), and should essentially all abortions be banned (yes).
This is obviously true, but Enten doesn’t state the obvious conclusion to draw from this, which is that the mainstream of the Republican party now consists of authoritarian theocratic reactionaries, which seems like a bit of a problem in a liberal democracy, given that the Constitution only allows us to have two parties, and that’s one of them.
As to why the Republican party has been taken over by authoritarian theocratic reactionaries, this Gallup poll finds that the percentage of Americans who believe in the literal truth of the Bible, as new Speaker of the House Mike Johnson very much does, has fallen by 50% in the last 40 years. White evangelical Protestantism is in massive retreat as a demographic matter, which means that the choice for these people is between America as a Christian — this means white evangelical Protestant — nation, and some form of democracy.This includes even the very weak form that democracy exists in America, given the sacred Constitution, the filibuster, gerrymandering, the severely anti-democratic consequences of judicial review wielded by life tenured judges confirmed by the Senate and nominated by presidents who don’t even win a plurality of votes, etc. But even this watered down version of democracy is bad for authoritarian theocratic nationalism, so it too has to go.
That’s what the Republican “mainstream” stands for today, which is why Mike Johnson is now Speaker of the House, and Donald Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee for president.

This “the immigrants are all guys of fighting age” is nonsense. Biden has refused entry and expelled 3.5 Million migrants, mostly due to Title 42 but he also doesn’t allow single adults to enter, only families and single children. It’s exactly the opposite of what these people claim.

Attorney Sidney Powell reached a plea deal with Fulton County prosecutors on Thursday, a day before jury selection was set to begin for her election interference trial.
During an appearance in Fulton County Superior Court, Powell pleaded guilty to six misdemeanor counts of conspiracy to commit intentional interference with performance of election duties. She had originally been charged with felony racketeering and six other felony conspiracy counts for her alleged role in breaching the voting system in rural Coffee County after the 2020 election.
As part of the deal, Powell agreed to testify truthfully in the case and on Wednesday recorded a video statement with prosecutors. She will receive six years probation and pay a $6,000 fine. She also agreed to pay $2,700 in restitution to the Georgia Secretary of State’s office to replace election equipment in Coffee County. And Powell wrote a letter of apology to the citizens of Georgia.
It’s a major development in a case that also has seen charges against former President Donald Trump and 17 other defendants. They are accused of participating in an illegal scheme to overturn Biden’s victory in Georgia in the 2020 presidential election.
Powell’s plea deal is a significant win for Fulton prosecutors. Powell can speak to closed-door Oval Office meetings she had with Trump, Rudy Giuliani and several other co-defendants.
The fact that Trump won’t ever be able to pardon anybody for criminal convictions under Georgia law seems like it might be a problem for him.

Trump’s “Truth Social” is floundering, failing . . . which is typical of his scams, everything Trump touches dies
Donald Trump is a one man crime syndicate who currently has 91 felony counts pending in four criminal indictments. The charges against him range from paying hush money to a porn star, to falsifying business records, to unlawful possession of classified documents, to obstruction of justice, to election interference, to inciting an insurrection, and so much more.
This is an unprecedented display of depravity that more closely resembles the behavior of an inept mob boss than a former president. And it is more than just a legal calamity for Trump. It is an embarrassment to the Republican Party and his cohorts in Congress who still support him and his criminal conduct, and upon whom he is relying for salvation.
Consequently, it should come as no surprise that Trump’s Twitter ripoff, Truth Social, is mired in the same sort of criminal controversies that have followed Trump for decades. And now it is suffering yet another setback as it barrels toward bankruptcy. According to reports…

“The loss of funding for DWAC [Digital World Acquisition Corp.] appears to be a step backward for the prospective merger between the company and Trump’s media outfit, which runs Truth Social.” […]
“With the loss of the funding, it’s unclear how Trump’s media group, called Trump Media & Technology Group, would finance its operations after the merger. The plan was that DWAC would provide TMTG with a deep pool of funds after the merger was completed.”
TMTG’s CEO, former GOP congressman Devin Nunes, inexplicably called the fund forfeiture “an important step towards…completing our merger,” However, he didn’t bother to explain how the loss of nearly a billion dollars in financing would lead to that end, or how it would benefit shareholders.
For some background, shortly after Truth Social was launched it was tied to DWAC, a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). The law prohibits SPACs from discussing potential acquisition targets prior to their formation. But laws have never been an impediment to grifters in Trump World. The stock immediately ran up to $175.00, which is where the now indicted investors bailed out with huge gains. The stock now sits at about $15.00.
There are good reasons for the stock’s abysmal performance. The whole enterprise is a sham that can’t grow its user base or attract advertising. Meanwhile, the reputation for illegal activity on Trump’s part has been evident in the affairs of his Truth Social disease. In addition to the Grand Jury proceedings, the SEC is investigating whether TMTG and DWAC executives improperly coordinated with each other and engaged in insider trading. They have also partnered with a Chinese firm with a dubious legal past.
As a bonus, it turns out that Trump bailed on his crooked company just weeks before subpoenas were served. He removed himself and Don Jr from the board of TMTG and is no longer named as the company’s chairman. What’s more, DWAC agreed to a settlement with the SEC that includes a finding that the company violated anti-fraud laws and will require them to pay an $18 million civil penalty when/if the deal closes. And signaling deeper problems with the SPAC’s finances, its auditor has resigned.
This is par for the course for Trump, whose businesses have a habit of failing after he and a few insiders enrich themselves before the predictable collapse. But anyone investing in a Trump enterprise shouldn’t complain when they go belly up. They should know by now that he is a scam artist who is focused solely on his welfare. And if they don’t see it, it’s because they don’t want to. That’s how cults work.
